What Four Bars

Last updated: September 15, 2026

Overview

What Four Bars is a music practice app that analyses audio to identify musical information such as tempo, key, beats, bars, phrases and song sections.

Audio analysis is performed on your device. Your music and recordings are not uploaded to the developer or to a cloud service for musical analysis.

What Four Bars does not require an account and does not ask you to provide your name, email address or other directly identifying personal information in order to use the app.

What Four Bars uses privacy-focused, anonymous usage analytics to understand how the app is used, identify problems and improve its features. You can disable analytics collection at any time within the app.

Information stored on your device

Content you create or import into What Four Bars is stored locally on your device.

This may include:

• Imported audio files
• Audio selected from your device’s music library
• Recordings made within What Four Bars
• Analysis results, including tempo, key, beats, bars, phrases and song sections
• Saved projects
• Saved clips and practice selections
• Project and clip names
• Practice settings such as playback speed, transpose, loop and metronome settings
• App settings and preferences

What Four Bars does not upload this content to the developer or to TelemetryDeck.

In particular, What Four Bars does not transmit your audio, recordings, song titles, project names, clip names or filenames as analytics.

If you delete the app, locally stored content may also be deleted unless you have previously exported content elsewhere.

On-device music analysis

What Four Bars uses Apple’s on-device music-understanding technologies to analyse supported audio.

Analysis may identify information including:

• Tempo
• Beats and bars
• Musical key
• Phrases
• Song sections
• Other musical structure used by the app’s practice tools

This analysis takes place on your device.

Your audio is not uploaded to the developer or to a remote server for this analysis.

Anonymous usage analytics

What Four Bars uses TelemetryDeck, a third-party privacy-focused analytics service, to collect anonymous information about how the app is used.

This may include:

• Which screens, tabs or guide pages are opened
• Which practice features and controls are used
• Which selection modes are used
• Whether loops, clips, recordings, imports or exports are created or used
• Whether analysis succeeds or fails
• Whether purchase, restoration or paywall actions occur
• Generalised information about usage, such as duration ranges or feature counts
• App version and build number
• Whether the app is running as a development, TestFlight or App Store build
• General device model or category, such as iPhone or iPad, where available
• Major operating-system version
• Paywall wording or experiment variant shown

TelemetryDeck may assign an anonymised identifier associated with a particular app installation so that aggregated usage, sessions and retention can be measured.

What Four Bars does not provide TelemetryDeck with your name, email address, Apple Account, advertising identifier, song titles, filenames, project names, audio content or another directly identifying account identifier.

Analytics information is used only to understand app usage, diagnose problems and improve What Four Bars.

It is not used for targeted advertising, advertising measurement or cross-app tracking, and it is not sold to data brokers.

You can disable anonymous analytics within What Four Bars. When analytics is disabled, What Four Bars stops sending analytics events to TelemetryDeck.

More information about TelemetryDeck’s privacy practices is available at:

Music library access

What Four Bars allows you to choose supported music already available on your device.

Music Library access is used only so that you can select audio to create a What Four Bars project.

Your music library is not uploaded to the developer and the titles of music you select are not included in analytics.

Some protected or subscription-streaming content may not be available for local analysis.

Files

What Four Bars allows you to import supported audio using Apple’s Files interface.

This can include files available through locations and services that you have connected to Files, such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.

What Four Bars accesses only the files you choose to import.

Imported audio is processed locally and is not uploaded to the developer for analysis.

If a third-party storage provider is used through Files, that provider’s own privacy practices also apply to its storage and transfer of the file.

Microphone and recordings

What Four Bars can use your device’s microphone when you choose to make a recording within the app.

Microphone access is used only when you initiate recording.

Recordings are stored locally and can be analysed and used as projects within What Four Bars.

Recordings are not uploaded to the developer or included in analytics.

Photo Library and video import

What Four Bars allows you to select supported video from your Photos library so that its audio can be used within the app.

The app accesses only the item you choose through Apple’s system interfaces.

Selected media and extracted audio are processed for the requested feature and are not uploaded to the developer or included in analytics.

Clips and exports

What Four Bars allows you to save and export selected audio clips.

Exported files are created from audio you have chosen to use within the app.

When you export or share a clip or recording, the file is transferred only to the destination or service you choose through Apple’s system interfaces.

What Four Bars does not upload exported files to the developer.

The privacy practices of the destination or service you select will apply once the file is shared or exported there.

Purchases

What Four Bars offers an optional permanent unlock through Apple’s App Store.

Purchase processing is handled by Apple. What Four Bars does not receive or store your full payment-card details.

What Four Bars may record anonymous analytics events indicating that a paywall was displayed or that a purchase or restoration process was started, completed, cancelled, left pending or failed.

These analytics events do not include your payment details or Apple Account information.

Apple’s privacy policy applies to purchases processed through the App Store.

Feedback and Support

What Four Bars may provide options to send feedback or contact support.

If you choose to contact the developer by email or another communication method, any information you voluntarily include in that message will be received and used for the purpose of responding to your enquiry or feedback.

What Four Bars does not otherwise require you to provide an email address or create an account.

Tracking and advertising

What Four Bars does not:

• Display third-party advertising
• Use advertising networks
• Access Apple’s advertising identifier for advertising purposes
• Combine What Four Bars analytics with information from other companies’ apps or websites for advertising
• Use collected information for targeted advertising or advertising measurement
• Sell personal information to data brokers

Under Apple’s definition, What Four Bars does not use collected information for tracking purposes.

Children’s privacy

What Four Bars can be used by people of different ages but is not specifically directed only at children.

The app does not require an account and does not ask users to submit directly identifying personal information in order to use its core features.

Parents and guardians should supervise children when they use features that allow audio, recordings or exported files to be shared with another app or service selected by the user.

Data retention and deletion

Projects, audio, recordings, clips and other content stored locally can be removed within What Four Bars where deletion controls are provided, or by deleting the app.

Content that you have separately exported may remain at the destination to which you exported it.

Anonymous analytics information held by TelemetryDeck is handled according to TelemetryDeck’s retention and privacy practices.

Because What Four Bars analytics are designed not to be linked to your identity or an account, the developer may not be able to locate analytics relating to a particular individual.

Security and cloud processing

What Four Bars does not require cloud processing to analyse your music.

Core musical analysis is performed locally on your device.

Like other iOS and iPadOS apps, What Four Bars relies on security and privacy protections provided by Apple’s operating systems and system frameworks.

Changes to this policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when What Four Bars features, third-party services or data practices change.

Updates will be published on this page with a revised “Last updated” date.
